The healing power of the Krimml Waterfalls

Allergy sufferers & asthmatics visiting the Krimml Waterfalls in the national park municipality of Krimml can breathe a sigh of relief! Because the unusually fine mist generated at the Krimml Waterfalls is a unique remedy for allergies and asthma. Even though Salzburg physicians realised the healing power of the Krimml Waterfalls some 200 years ago, these findings were not recognised by the medical community at the time and fell into oblivion. Only at the beginning of the 21st century was extensive research conducted about the healing effect of Europe’s largest waterfalls – with surprising results!

Medical research with impressive results

Medical research began with several studies at the Joanneum Research Institute for non-invasive diagnostics in Graz. The promising findings were confirmed by studies at Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg (PMU) in the years 2006 to 2008. Thanks to the financial contribution by Grossglockner Hochalpenstrassen AG and public funds, it was possible to set up the “Splash Camp Krimml”, where a clinical study with 54 children suffering from asthma was conducted. The result: Spending one hour by the Krimml Waterfalls a day resulted in lasting functional, symptomatic and immunological improvement in the conditions of all subjects.

How the waterfall unfolds its effect: Nanoaerosols against asthma and allergy

The Krimml Waterfalls are an impressive natural spectacle: The masses of water thunder down into the valley. Spray and mist rise up, within visitors’ grasp. And it’s exactly in this fine mist that the secret of the healing effect of the Krimml Waterfalls lies!

Thanks to the force of the water thundering down, the individual molecules are smashed into nanometre-sized water droplets when hitting the rocks – about 200 times smaller than the drops in an asthma inhaler.

A high number of negatively charged ions cling to these tiny droplets. By comparison: The air we normally breathe contains 300 to 3,000 ion pairs per cubic centimetre – in the vicinity of the Krimml Waterfalls up to 70,000 are recorded!

As the droplets charged with irons measure only nanometres – tiny little, then – they can be breathed in easily and penetrate deep into the lungs through the airways. There the nano-aerosols can fully unfold their cleansing and anti-inflammatory effect.

But the Krimml Waterfalls have a positive effect not only on asthma and allergies, but also on stress and exhaustion. In addition, spending time in the fresh air filled with mist also boosts the immune system with lasting effect.
